Marcus is a triple-qualified lawyer (Singapore, New York, and England & Wales) based in our Singapore office. Marcus obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Law (First Class Honours) from the University of Cambridge and was awarded the Sidney Sussex College Law Tripos Prize for outstanding academic performance (top 10%) and the Double Leonard Coling Law Scholarship. He then completed a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School where he was awarded the Dean’s Scholar Prize. Upon his return to Singapore, Marcus ranked fourth overall in the Singapore Bar Examinations, earning distinctions in three subjects.
Marcus’ practice focuses on high-value and complex international commercial and investment arbitration disputes across a broad range of sectors, with a strong interest in technology, energy and commodity disputes.
Prior to joining LFM, Marcus trained directly under a leading Senior Counsel at a top-tier Singapore law firm and served as a legal policymaker with the Singapore Government, where he represented Singapore in international fora and multilateral negotiations. He also previously served as Research Associate to Emeritus Professor Hal S. Scott, the former Governor of the American Stock Exchange (2002-2005), where he led the data team for the 24th edition of Scott & Gelpern’s International Finance: Transactions, Policy, and Regulation.
Marcus teaches the Law and Technology module at the National University of Singapore and holds data-protection qualifications as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/A/E/US) and a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Arbitration Matters
Representative Cases (Including before joining the firm):
Technology Dispute: Assisted Senior Counsel in a cross-border SIAC arbitration in the Asia-Pacific region between a major video game developer and a publishing agency. The dispute centred on issues of illegality under contract law and the enforceability of obligations tainted by statutory contravention.
Energy & Commodities Dispute: Assisted Senior Counsel in a Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration involving a dispute over confidential information and proprietary know-how relating to a steel mill. The matter also involved complex issues concerning the setting aside of the arbitral award.
Litigation Matters
Representative Cases (Including before joining the firm):
Technology and Media Litigation involving a Broadcasting Company: Assisted in a Singapore High Court action brought by a consortium of music composers against a major television broadcaster, involving overlapping claims of copyright infringement and breaches of licensing agreements.
Taxation Dispute: Assisted in a taxation dispute addressing whether a Taxing Master could take into account allegations of solicitor negligence in assessing costs.
Shareholder and Company Oppression Litigation: Assisted in a minority shareholder dispute in the aviation technology sector before the Singapore High Court, involving allegations of oppressive conduct and breach of directors’ duties.
Broadcasting Conglomerate Disputes: Assisted in a complex pre-dispute matter between an international broadcasting company and a global news conglomerate. Key issues included arbitrability, application of Singapore’s Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act, and potential veil piercing to extend liability.
Securities and Futures Ordinance Litigation: Assisted a Hong Kong barrister in a final appeal before the HKCFA concerning whether a statutory claim under the Securities and Futures Ordinance (Cap. 571) could be characterized as a ‘tort’, which would affect issues relating to service outside of jurisdiction.
Estate and Copyright Succession: Assisted in a pre-dispute matter involving a book publishing company, raising complex cross-border issues under Singapore and Australian law concerning when an executor becomes functus officio and the transmission of copyright under residual clauses in wills.
Patent Infringement Dispute: Assisted in a pre-trial patent infringement dispute brought by a pharmaceutical conglomerate. The matter turned on principles of purposive construction and identification of essential features under Singapore patent law.
Banking Industry Source Code Dispute: Assisted in a pre-dispute matter involving an international bank and a multinational software provider concerning the copyright and contractual implications of reverse engineering under Singapore's Copyright Act.
Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) Disputes: Assisted in a UDRP proceeding involving a contested domain name in the digital banking industry, with issues including bad faith registration and legitimate interest in domain usage.
